Support Huja on Tuesday November 8th, 2011

I am announcing my candidacy for Charlottesville City Council on Tuesday November 8th, 2011. I am hoping that all of you will be there to support me.

I bring a proven record of service to the community. I have experience and expertise in finding creative solutions for cities problems and I will seek new opportunities to improve our community. I believe I can make a positive difference in the quality of our community.

In the last three years on city council I have worked to improve our community . I have supported energy conservation and efficiency programs; affordable housing, especially single room occupancy – SRO; Jefferson School development; JPA bridge replacement; Old Lynchburg Road sidewalk and drainage; improvements to transit and bike system; Martha Jefferson Conservation District; noise ordinance improvements for Belmont; summer internship program for youth; support for quality education; creation of Police Advisory Board and Tree commission ; Dialogue on race; downtown mall revitalization; and Smith Aquatic Center among others.

 I have a bright vision for Charlottesville.

•             I hope that we will work together to preserve and enhance our environment. This will include: clean streams and Rivanna river; protection of trees and promotion of green construction, energy conservation, sustainable development and quality design.

•             I hope that sometime soon all neighborhoods in the city will be safe and strong, with the least amount of cut through traffic and improved neighborhood infrastructure

•             I hope that someday soon we will have a balanced transportation system instead of just being stuck in our cars in traffic. I hope that it will include: dependable and frequent transit system, and an interconnected network of safe bikeways and sidewalks.

•             I hope that someday soon all residents of Charlottesville will be able to afford safe and decent housing. I will support assistance to low and moderate income families for housing, and I will encourage surrounding counties to provide fair share of affordable housing.

•             I hope that every child in our school system will be challenged to develop their potential to the fullest. I will support early childhood education.

•             I will also propose deferral of part of property taxes for low and fixed income families, till sale or transfer of their property, so that they can continue to afford to live in their home.

•             Last but not least, I hope that someday soon people of all races and diversities will be treated with dignity and equity. I promise to do so myself.

I hope to work with the citizens of the community on these goals and dreams.

 

I am excited about the possibility of continuing my community service on the city council. I will be proactive in dealing with community needs and protecting the quality of life and the environment of this community.

I will work with all citizens, to make Charlottesville a better community for all and I seek your support in this effort.
